Predictably, my request for a Barbie free Christmas was met with protest and indignation, though well meaning. It seems my political agenda is preventing my daughter from having the well-rounded girl’s childhood marketer’s intended. It’s only a doll, after all. And yes, I do let my daughter have other “girly” things, so why not Barbie Millicent Roberts? When Barbie hit the scene in 1959, she was an independent lady. She bought her own cars and homes. She had boyfriends, but was not married, and she had several interesting careers. When I look at today’s store shelves I see a lot of princess themed Barbie dolls, but nothing else. Barbie’s official site offers other careers. What really scares me is how media already controls so…

“MAYBE THE WAY WE CHANGE THE WORLD IS BY RAISING BETTER KIDS AND BEING MORE ATTENTIVE TO THOSE KIDS.” – JIM LINDBERG A 2011 documentary by Andrea Blaugrund Nevins looks into how fatherhood has changed the perspective of some veteran punk rockers; an endearing perspective and varied as it wasn’t entirely about fatherhood but getting older and changing ideals. The Other F Word mainly follows Jim Lindberg of Pennywise but we also hear from Lars Fredricksen, Mark Hoppus, Rob Chaos, Tony Hawk, Rick Thorne and many more punk papas. You’re going to smile when you hear Flea, his stories are pretty adorable. And if you’re like me you’ll be envious of Fat Mike‘s home decor. Then you’ll cry when Duane Peters shares the story of his…

After an absence due to being a sick, overwhelmed single mama, I’ve combined the two final parts together; final thoughts and resources. Cheers xo After taking a gender specific look at negative media influence on children here’s my two cents on how the two worlds collide (Keep in mind this has been some pretty basic information. We’re not taking the in depth look going into religion, sexual orientation, race, income level etc.) Children are constantly growing and absorbing everything. If you’re around a child often enough you’ll notice that they’ve adopted your favourite expressions or roll their eyes the same way as your mother-in-law. That’s the child’s immediate influence, admittedly a major one. How about the media influence coming from billboards, buses, bus stops,…
When I interviewed Yvette Nechvatal-Drew, executive director of Girls Incorporated of Durham, Girls Inc., she said fifty per cent of girls between the ages of eight and 18 have a television in their room. “That is 5 million channels sending messages 24/7 and they have a captive audience,” Nechvatal-Drew added. The message is rather terrifying for myself; being a female raising a female. Media Smarts shared 2008 research findings by Dr. Maya Götz with International Central Institute for Youth and Educational Television: While women represent 49 per cent of the world’s population, female characters made up 32 per cent of television’s main characters. And though magazines are the only form of media that represents mostly females, the majority of topics are regarding fashion and…
